HENRY M JACKSON FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MILITARY M
This ARRA supplement under the parent U01 grant was funded to expand the original parent U01 scope of work. Based on our earlier meetings with NIMH and the US Army, the focus of this study was expanded in five ways: (i) the range of outcomes assessed; (ii) the assessment of neurobiological predictors; (iii) the assessment of psychosocial risk factors; (iv) collaboration with the Marines; and (v) to facilitate evaluation of the effects of interventions.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
This quarter, we completed the New Soldier Study (NSS) data collection with nearly 55,000 Soldiers attending survey sessions and about 35,000 Soldiers providing a blood sample. We also completed data collection this quarter for the AAS Clinical Calibration Study (CCS) with 460 completed clinical interviews. Through this quarter, we administered All Army Study (AAS) surveys to more 44,000 Soldiers in the US and abroad, including Soldiers in Kuwait who were either leaving Afghanistan for temporary leave, or returning to Afghanistan from temporary leave. The approximately 9,500 Soldiers who participated in the pre-deployment phase of the Pre/Post Deployment Study (PPDS) have returned from deployment which allowed us to begin post-deployment data collection at 3 successive points in time, and blood collection at the first of those points in time. Soldier Health Outcomes Study A (SHOS-A) enrollment has reached 121 cases and 220 controls, and we have collected blood samples from 175 of those participants. We continued data collection in the Soldier Health Outcomes Study B (SHOS-B) and have completed 279 interviews with case and control informants (next-of-kin and Army supervisors). For the Historical Data Study (HDS), we continued to process, clean, document, and analyze the more than 1.1 billion records of Army/DoD administrative data. In addition, this quarter we finally received a dataset from the Army of historical neurocognitive data that we need to process, clean, document and add to the study. We have continued to report findings to Army leadership on roughly a quarterly basis, depending on the schedules of Army leadership. We continued refining the neurobiology plans including plans for DNA, RNA and other analyses. We began genotyping the DNA from about 8,000 pre-deployment PPDS blood samples and about 8,000 NSS blood samples. We continued collaborating with the Marine Resilience Study (MRS) investigators. The ARRA portion of this study is now complete. |
