The project objective of the first phase SBIR grant is to complete a detailed architecture of specification of the VFP control framework, definition of processing engines required for programmable WiMAX/LTE processor, and to evaluate the feasibility of an implementation of LTE/WiMAX baseband and MAC protocols on a VFP based platform.
The VFP controller framework specification will include a functional description, definition of control data structures, and an architectural design for the key VFP categories of functions.
The implementation complexity of the VP controller will be analyzed based on the number of required registers, required memory size, and on the estimated state machine and data path complexities.
The WiMAX and LTE wireless protocols will be analyzed in order to identify and define the common functional units required for baseband and MAC processing of both standards. The mapping of these wireless protocols to the operations of the selected functional units and software defined functions will be performed next. The complexity of the programmable solution will be analyzed by estimating the logic gate count for the functional modules and the VFP controller.
