Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

AURORA, CITY OF

The City of Aurora has been awarded Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program funds (HPRP) under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). These funds have been allocated to provide homelessness prevention assistance to households who would otherwise become homeless - many due to the current economic crisis - and to provide rapid re-housing assistance for persons who are homeless as defined by Section 103 of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. These funds will be used to provide temporary financial assistance and housing relocation and stabilization services to families or individuals who are homeless or who would be homeless but for this assistance, and will target two populations of persons facing housing instability: 1) those currently in housing but at risk of becoming homeless and needing temporary rent or utility assistance to prevent them from becoming homeless or assistance to move to another unit (prevention), and 2) those experiencing homelessness (residing in emergency or transitional shelters or on the street) and needing temporary assistance in order to obtain housing and retain it (rapid re-housing). Program funds have been contracted to a lead agency that will work in collaboration with nine additional nonprofit agencies. Through the collaborative, diverse segments of the population will be served; mental health, human services programs, persons seeking emergency assistance, minority populations, persons experiencing domestic violence, newly released from prison and hospitals, homeless, persons seeking employment and persons who have lost their home through foreclosure. Each agency offers a multitude of unique services and in addition, applicants can be referred to other program sites that best serve their needs. Approved applicants will receive case management, financial assistance for housing or utilities and referrals for additional services. In total, the program seeks to aid at least 339 households.
