NATURE CONSERVANCY, THE
This project improved more than 11 miles of important salmon spawning and rearing habitat along the Shasta River and tributaries. The Shasta River is an important salmon producing tributary to the larger Klamath River which supports an active commercial, tribal and recreational fishery for Chinook salmon. However, the Southern Oregon and Northern California (SONC) coho salmon are listed as threatened both federally and by the State of California and this project worked toward restoration of habitat that is critical to their survival and eventual recovery in the Shasta and Klamath Rivers. This project included the installation of livestock exclusion fencing along waterways which supported natural revegetation of 125 acres of the riparian zone of which 32 acres were actively planted with native riparian plants. Additional activities included fish friendly irrigation improvements that protected cold water springs, enhanced cold water flows, and restored aquatic habitat critical for Chinook, steelhead, and threatened coho salmon in the Shasta River. Upon completion of this project 14,661 jobs hours were spent, instream water temperatures goals were met, and fish were documented along the entire stretch of Big Springs Creek, as opposed to small pockets prior to the implementation of this project. The activities completed as a result of this grant has provided year-round rearing habitat for coho, Chinook and steelhead in the Shasta River.
