Project Activities Description Meal Distribution
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The Virgin Islands Department of Human Services ARRA Grant for Home-Delivered Nutrition Services was used to augment existing resources, replaced revenue lost from local sources due to the economic downturn, and supported the continued delivery of meals to vulnerable older Americans. Additionally, the Nutrition Program provides a range of related services by the departmental nutritionist and supervisor to include nutrition screening, assessment, education and counselling. Home-delivered meals help seniors to maintain their health and avoid hospitalization and nursing home placement. Approximately 15% of the seniors who are part of the Elderly Nutrition Program required meal delivery seven days a week. Meals served under the program provided at least one-third of the daily recommended dietary allowances established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. The AARA funds were fully expended in this quarter. The Department of Human Services was able to serve a total of 417 senior citizens with the Home Delivered MealsARRA funding -234 seniors in the St. Thomas/St. John district and 183 seniors in the St. Croix District.. A total of 10,047 meals were served.
