Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

This award is a 2-year collaborative project between the University of New Mexico, Northern Arizona University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth to conduct detailed paleoclimatic analysis of an 82-m long lacustrine sediment core (VC-3) from the Valles Caldera, northern New Mexico. This record spans approximately 200,000 years in the middle Pleistocene, including two full glacial cycles. The objective of our project is to reconstruct climate changes over this timespan including a novel proxy for determining past temperatures (analysis of methylated branched tetraethers of soil bacteria preserved in the lake sediment), watershed vegetation changes from pollen, and changes in precipitation from sediment geochemistry including oxygen isotope analysis of diatom frustules. We are interested in how climate changed in northern New Mexico on orbital (glacial-interglacial) timescales as well as on millennial-scale timescales including abrupt climate changes during glacial time periods. We will also focus on the relationship between past times of warmth and aridity in the southwest as climate models project future ?dust bowl-like? conditions in the future as a result of anthropogenic global warming.
