This agreement provides American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funds to supplement DEC's efforts to assess and clean up petroleum releases from leaking underground storage tanks (LUST) sites in the state of New York. It will fund "shovel ready" projects (sites that are ready for assessment and cleanup) that are typically orphan or abandoned sites (where owners/operators of the sites are unknown or unable to pay) of which there are approximately 200,000 in the U.S. The overall purpose is to clean up contaminated LUST sites effectively, maximize job creation and provide economic benefits to the citizens of the state of New York.
