UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO-MEDICAL SCIENCES CAMPUS
The objective of this proposal is to establish at the Caribbean Primate Research Center (CPRC) a new specific
pathogen free SPF colony of Indian origin rhesus macaques to help meet National demand for these animals.
The founding stock of this colony will be donated by the Center and will consist of approximately of 225 SPF
animals. These animals will be housed in reproduction corncribs, will be quarterly tested for the presence of 4
target viruses STLV, SRV, SIV and Herpes B and typed for MHC class I and II alleles. At the end of these two
years, the new SPF colony will produce an estimated offspring of about 32 SPF animals. After year 4, it is
estimated that the output of this colony will be of no less than 108 SPF macaques/year .This supplement will
offer new job opportunities at the CPRC and at different research units which require the use of SPF macaques
to start new projects . It will also allow CPRC to continue to make significant contributions to AIDS and to other
biomedical research programs by making available high quality MHC typed SPF rhesus monkeys to NIHsponsored
projects.
