Head Start Program
Number of Children Served: 50 at the start of the ARRA Cycle, 65 at the conclusion of the cycle
Cities Served: Unalaska, Sand Point, St. Paul, King Cove ? All in Alaska
ARRA monies were utilized to enhance the Head Start Program through:Replacing worn materials and purchase of new classroom materials. Purchase of critical office supplies and materials
Providing funds for staff to attend college courses to obtain or maintain required certifications or credentials. This provides highly qualified staff of classrooms and content supervisors thus enhancing the quality of the Head Start enrollees attendance. Currently 75% of classrooms are staffed by individuals with at least a CDA and 25% are enrolled in a CDA Program and 25% are staffed by an individual with an AA degree, 25% are progressing towards an AA degree. Providing funds for memberships in professional organizations thus making current research available to staff and enhancing the quality of the Head Start Program. Provide for one time merit increase to pay.
The primary result of the ARRA funds was to enhance the quality of the Head Start Program by providing resources to staff to receive educational benefits allowing them to interact at a higher level with both student and family. In addition, ARRA funds were utilized to support the programs food services. We provided health, low salt fat and sugar snacks and meals for all Head Start students.

Associations allowed through ARRA funds in the form of dues to join professional organizations such as the National Indian Head Start Directors Association or the National Head Start Association has provided staff with current information or techniques that enhances their skills in the classroom and therefore their student?s likelihood of long term academic success. As long as the staff what has taken advantage of the benefits offered through the ARRA funds remain with the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association Head Start Program, the program will continue to reap the benefits of their education and experience.
