PHOENIX, CITY OF
The purpose of the Healthy Homes Demonstration Grant is to identify and remediate priority health hazards in high risk target housing where environmental conditions may contribute to a child's illness or risk of injury; support public education and outreach that furthers the goal of protecting children and other vulnerable populations from environmentally induced illnesses; develop a professional workforce that is trained in healthy homes principles; evaluate the efficiency of healthy homes program activities and facilitate the dissemination of findings, with a focus on evidence based, best practices, public awareness of housing related health and safety hazards that threaten the health of children and other vulnerable populations; and further the principles of environmental justice and fair housing by increasing the availability of safe, low-income housing.

ARRA funds allowed the City of Phoenix to characterize health and safety hazards and conduct appropriate pre-assessments of 102 housing units occupied by at-risk children. The program completed 95 units, exceeding the original goal of making 85 units safe. Community education and outreach was provided to 3,457 residents. This program has created 18.85 jobs to date. |
