The award was used to repair the exterior masonry surfaces of a five-story unreinforced masonry apartment building which houses 50 low-income elderly or disabled residents. Evaluation of the structure determined that there was considerable deterioration of the mortar joints with many joints in a state of failure. Work includes repointing mortar joints, replacing damaged brick units, installing masonry anchors, reglazing horizontal surfaces, and replacing the parapet cap to prevent water infiltration and further damage to the interior structure. 80 % of the exterior surfaces have been cleaned and 10 % of the brickwork has been repointed. |
