MASSACHUSETTS, COMMONWEALTH OF
This grant will reduce the threat of wildfire to communities and resources on state and private lands in southeast Massachusetts and restore the ecosystem through: 1) adding state fire management specialists, 2) increasing fire planning in high-risk areas, 3) assisting communities with the development of Community Wildfire Protection Plans, 4) expanding the Firewise Communities Program, 5) implementing Firewise treatments in communities, 6) implementing hazard mitigation activities through fuels reduction and community defensibility, 7) planning and preparing for hazard mitigation projects and 8) conducting related forestry activities in forest health protection and forest stewardship that help reduce the fire hazard in southeastern Massachusetts.

During the quarter the following was accomplished: Prescribed Fire Activity Accomplished - 272 acres were burned on State Lands & 47 acres were burned on Private & Agency Cooperator Lands; Community Wildfire Protection Plans: 6 Community Wildfire Protection Plans were completed 100% for all 6 Towns in Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County; Fire Programs: 8 Forest Fire Prevention Programs were conducted in the following towns: Truro (72 in attendance), Massachusetts Military Reservation Open House (53 in attendance), Hyannis (160 in attendance), Cape Cod Mall (500+ in attendance), Barnstable (65 in attendance), Orleans (70 in attendance), Bourne (120 in attendance) and Yarmouth Elementary School (30 in attendance). The grant ended on November 19, 2011.
