Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES

While the factors that determine the distribution of species in natural ecosystems are relatively well understood, we are lacking a strong conceptual framework for the spatial distribution, diversity, and function of urban plants. This study of the biogeography of urban forests will take place in Los Angeles, a highly vulnerable region to climate change and whose original biogeography did not include the amount of tree canopy cover there is now today, planted by humans.

Project Title COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: TOWARD A BIOGEOGRAPHY OF URBAN FORESTS
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools
Quarterly Activities/Project Description ACTIVITY: Mapping the species composition, cover, and leaf area of the urban forest of Los Angeles with current inventories and historical analyses of photos, historical records, and satellite images. We will measure physiological processes of urban trees to develop a functional diversity classification and evaluate species responses to climatic gradients and management intensity. PURPOSE: To help elucidate the major factors influencing choices and preferences for urban trees that are an important influence in creating local environments, including mitigating the urban heat island, and impacting local water budgets. OUTCOMES: To test a conceptual framework for urban plant biogeography that involves both plant-environment interactions and canopy physiology as well as cultural preferences, institutional rules, and economic factors. DELIVERABLES: Understanding relationship between the urban forest and nursery stock availability over time. Changing economic conditions affect availability of tree species, which in turn impacts water use, urban heat island mitigation, maintenance and other factors. RESULTS: History of the evolution of the nursery industry in the region, measurements of the physiological processes of urban trees, species responses to climatic gradients and management, better understanding of the conditions and processes of the urban forest in Los Angeles. SUBAWARD: To Urban Semillas a local non-profit community building organization in Los Angeles.for seven educational workshops on urban forest processes and inventory methods called "Arbol University. Target: minority and underserved high school and community college students and teachers as well as non-profit organizations. Workshops will involve classroom and field instruction to train Urban Semillas staff in the use of GPS and tree measurement methods to develop an inventory protocol. Workshop participants will take measurements at our field sites as well as local community sites used by Urban Semillas.
