NATIONAL JEWISH HEALTH
The overall purpose of the project funded by this award is to support the early independent phase of the career of a pulmonary physician-scientist at National Jewish Health. National Jewish Health is the world's only institution that is dedicated to the treatment and research of pulmonary and immune-mediated disease. To further the overall mission of National Jewish Health, a physician-scientist was recruited to join the Pulmonary Division and the Airway Biology Core at National Jewish Health and to establish his own laboratory that researches glucocorticoid receptor signaling in airway cells. This award will allow the newly recruited investigator to establish a state-of-the art laboratory for the analysis of gene regulation in the airway, and to hire several highly skilled researchers to conduct research on airway gene regulation. Specifically, the award will help provide the newly recruited investigator with protected time to conduct research, it will allow for the purchase of key equipment required to successfully run a molecular biology laboratory, it will provide for the employment of several research associates, and will provide money to support day-to-day laboratory operations. It is anticipated that this award will lead to both publications and the award of additional peer reviewed grants. These items will be tracked during and after the award period. It is also anticipated that the award will facilitate collaborations between different scientists at National Jewish, as indicated by joint projects, publications, and research awards.

The overall purpose of this award is to support the career of a newly independent physician scientist. The first element of the award was to support the successful transition of the newly recruited investigator into the research environment at National Jewish Health (NJH). This process has been completed. The PI supported by the award has fully equipped his laboratory, and the laboratory is running effectively with 4 staff members. During the last quarter, the supported investigator began utlizing funds from an RO1 award and tarnsitioned off of the ARRA grant. During the last quarter, the PI presented his work in an oral presentation at a FASEB meeting in Snowmass, CO. A manuscript on Klf15 and GR was also prepared fro submisssion. |

| Description of Jobs Created |
From July 1, 2010 to August 31, 2011, the salary for the newly recruited physician scientist was substantially supported by this award, allowing him to have a large percentage of time devoted to cutting edge scientific research on asthma biology and therapy, an illness that afflicts millions of Americans. Since August 31, 2011, as a component of the award, the supported investigator is now supported by a combination of institutional funds and clinical work, with a total of 75% time protected for research. His protected research time has allowed him to supervise a total of six additional scientists, all of whose jobs were created with funds provided by this award, or through institutional support that was guaranteed as part of the award application. At this juncture, the newly recruited investigator supervises three Ph.D level biology researchers whose psoitions were initially created with funds from this award. One began work on 11/30/09 and the other on 6/1/10. Two of these scientists recieved their Ph.D. degrees at prestigious universities in the USA, and the funds from this award have allowed them to continue their sceintific careers. These researchers are working on the molecular mechanism of glucocorticoid action in airway cells. Both post-doctoral scientists are receiving specialized training in lung biology and transcriptional regulation while conducting the research projects in the laboratory of the new investigator. This training has enabled one of the post-doctoral sceintists to obtain a position asa an assistnat lab director for a small company doing personalized laboratory medicine. Thus, these funds led directly to a trainee receiving a position in the private sector. Moreover, a third post-doctoral associate was recently hired, using institutional funds provided to the PI as part of the P30 award. In addition, a full time lab researcher was hired January, 2012. Her support is also based on institutional funds that were provided to the PI as part of the P30 award. It is anticipated that this Lab Researcher will be funded in the future using funds from an RO1 award, which was written based on work accomplished with funds from the P30. In addition, the PI previously employed another Lab Researcher II who was supported for ~ 1 year with ARRA funds. She obtained a new job at UC Denver in January 2011 where she is using skills acquired during her time of support with ARRA funds. A part-time researcher (32 hrs a week) was hired at 50% effort in February 2010, and transitioned to 80% effort from July 15, 2010 to December 1st, 2010. The part-time researcher assisted the post-doctoral scientists, and received specialized trained in a variety of molecular techniques. Her position was subsequently eliminated, however, she was able to obtain another full time position at National Jewish Health. The post-doctoral positions continue to be supported by funds from this award. As the supported investigator now receives funding throuygh an R01 award, it is anticipated that two post-doctoral positions will continue through at least 8/31/2015. Following their period of employment by National Jewish Health, the Ph.D. level scientists will be highly trained and able to continue to work in an academic setting or obtain scientist level positions in Biotechnology, a key growth sector in the economy. If the research career of the newly recruited scientist continues to flourish it is anticipated that there will be a total of 4 long-term jobs, including his own, that arose directly from this award. |
