Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - PAN AMERICAN

The University of Texas ? Pan American?s URM program will engage undergraduate students from a Hispanic Serving Institution in cohort research and mentoring to increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in science. The URM program will combine coursework, independent research, summer research at first-tier research institutions, presentations, community outreach, and group activities. URM students will examine interactions of arsenic with plants and microorganisms in the Laguna Madre, a rare hypersaline estuary ecosystem in South Texas. URM students will test the hypothesis that aquatic plants and microorganisms of the Laguna Madre are lessening the ecological impact of arsenic in the laguna by transforming and immobilizing arsenic via several mechanisms. URM participants will conduct research to assess the role of microorganisms and seagrass in arsenic transformations. Students will enroll in courses with their URM peers. Students will conduct summer research at the University of Arizona, the Georgia Institute of Technology or the University of Maryland and perform genetic, molecular, and bio-analytical experiments with experts at those institutions. Students will observe the academic culture of another institution first-hand, interact with researchers and students from other parts of the USA and world, and gain new scientific perspectives. Participants will be involved in group activities (e.g., workshops, ethics and writing courses, GRE preparation) to complement and enhance the research experience. URM students will perform community outreach by visiting local schools and presenting their research at an annual Hispanic science exhibition. The URM program provides an opportunity to involve students in research that will directly impact and involve their community while aiming to increase the knowledge, training, and diversity of biologists in the USA.

Projects and Jobs Information
Project Title URM: Undergraduate Research and Mentoring at a Hispanic Serving Institution Investigating a Rare Ecosystem
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Biological & Life Sciences
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The third (2011-2012) and fourth (2012-2013) cohorts continued their work on their projects. Participants were 12 students, of which 5 are female and 10 are Hispanic. Two additional students (both female and Hispanic) were selected to conduct research this summer using remaining URM funds. This will bring the total number of participants to 28 for the 4 year period of the grant. Several current and past URM participants will be graduating in May 2013 and will pursue post-graduation opportunities. Laura Torres has accepted a full-time research position the University of Texas ? Pan American and the USDA. Edelio Bazan and Brittany Pena have applied to several post-baccalaureate PREP programs and are awaiting final decisions on their applications. Brandi Quintanilla has been accepted into a Master?s Degree program at the University of North Texas. Amanda Cavazos will defend her honor?s thesis in April and is applying to PhD programs in Environmental Science for 2014. Janet Ruiz has been accepted into a teacher-exchange program and will spend 3 months teaching in rural Peru beginning in fall 2013. Several URM participants presented their research at the Texas Academy of Science meeting in March 2013. Esteban Triplett, Ramiro Garza, Thomas Eubanks (current URM students) as well as Peter Cerda and Zach Badaoui (past URM students) presented posters or gave oral presentations of their research. Janet Ruiz, Edelio Bazan, and Brittany Pena served as peer-judges for the student poster competition at the meeting. Many URM participants will conduct research at partner universities this summer. Ramiro Garza, Julian Gonzales III, and Kevin Thompson will conduct research at the University of Arizona with Dr. Betsy Arnold; Esteban Triplett will conduct research at the University of Maryland with Dr. Angus Murphy; John Rodriguez will conduct research at Georgia Tech with Dr. Thomas DiChristina. Other students in the program will continue their research at UTPA this summer.
Jobs Created 2.42
Description of Jobs Created Twelve (12) undergraduate research assistant jobs were supported during the quarterly period. The undergraduate research assistants conducted research on biological arsenic interactions in a rare ecosystem. The employment impacts were: (1) training new scientists who will be a part of the future workforce; (2) training underrepresented minorities (e.g., Hispanics, women) for future science careers; (3) investigating a rare ecosystem; and (4) disseminating scientific data through publications and presentations at scientific meetings. Ten (10) of the students are Hispanic and five (5) were female.
