ELECTRIC TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING CORPORATION
Transportation Electrification: Electric vehicle infrastructure deployment, demonstration and evaluation. Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation (eTec, now doing business as ECOtality North America) is partnering with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including Nissan North America and General Motors (GM), to deploy an extensive charging infrastructure in support of the wide release of electric vehicles (EVs) that started during the first quarter of 2011. With the goal of developing mature charging environments, the Project has started the process of installing EV charging infrastructure in twelve strategic regions: Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson), San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oregon (Portland, Eugene, Salem, and Corvallis), Washington (Seattle), Tennessee, Texas (Dallas and Houston), Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The Project will collect and analyze data to characterize vehicle use in these diverse topographic and climatic conditions, evaluate the effectiveness of charge infrastructure, and conduct trials of various revenue systems for publicly-available charge infrastructure. The Project will deploy approximately 13,200 Level 2 and DC Fast-Charge units. Deployment of this charging infrastructure is dependent upon grid-connected vehicle deliveries, and is targeting full project deployment in 2013. By 2014, The EV Project will have paved the way to deploying an electric vehicle charge infrastructure across the entire USA.

Residential EVSE deployment continued with 1,409 residential EVSE units installed in the quarter; bringing the total for the Project to 7,871. In addition, 417 non-residential EVSE units (workplace, fleet and publicly accessible) were installed in the quarter; bringing that total to 3,478. Seventeen DC Fast Charge units were also installed in the quarter, bringing the total DCFC installations to 74.
Data collection from plug-in vehicles and Blink EVSE continued in the quarter. Data was collected from vehicles which have accumulated more than 73,000,000 test miles, and have performed more than 2,340,000 individual charge events.
Access fees for publicly-accessible Level 2 EVSE units were collected in the quarter from 14,213 charge events at 2,926 publicly accessible EVSE units. Implementation of access fees for DC Fast Chargers is expected to be rolled out in the next quarter.

Installing the infrastructure to support a comprehensive system of electric charging stations in each of twelve target regions (representing diverse topographic and climatic conditions) will allow ECOtality North America to collect critical data and information to characterize electric vehicle (EV) use in each respective region. Analysis of this data will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the charging station infrastructure and ways to improve its effectiveness. By developing a rich infrastructure in each market, this Project will also elevate public awareness and acceptance of electric transportation, enable a successful consumer experience amongst early EV adopters, and increase market demand for electric transportation. This Project exemplifies the Department of Energy’s strategic foresight and commitment to improving our environment and economy. |
