UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
The proposed instrument, a chemical ionization aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (CI-ATOFMS), will couple the soft and selective ionization of CI, the ion trapping and transfer properties of an electrodynamic ion funnel (IF), and a high resolution orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (oa-TOF) mass spectrometer to produce a highly sensitive and selective instrumental technique designed for characterizing the organic content of atmospheric particles. The instrument will complement existing measurements while providing unique insights into the sources and processes leading to the large variety of organic species that exist in atmospheric aerosols. The ultimate analytical capabilities of CI-ATOFMS include: 1) obtaining real-time information on organic species in individual particles; 2) providing information on surface versus bulk species; and 3) selectively analyzing specific classes of compounds. The ability to identify the organic content of single aerosol particles and further classify the aerosols into broad categories based on their source, age, and/or mixing state will represent a significant step towards understanding the impact of aerosols on health and the environment.

See Award Description. We are continuing to develop and optimize the CI-ATOFMS. A key novel feature of the proposed instrument, a homebuilt ion funnel, has been implemented and proof of concept experiments of its ability to replace conventional drift tubes in PTRMS instruments were performed. This ion funnel was shown to effectively remove water clusters that complicate PTRMS ion signals (the traditional task of drift tubes in PTRMS instruments), without significantly impacting ion transmission. Ion simulations were performed and imply that ~90% of analyte ions can be transmitted in the ion funnel, which is a significant improvement over typical pinhole orifices found in drift tubes. Instrument characterization experiments were conducted to determine the sensitivity of the CI-ATOFMS to a variety of gas-phase analytes. The results indicated that in the tested configuration the CI-ATOFMS is less sensitive than other current state-of-the-art variations of chemical ionization mass spectrometers. An improved ion-molecule reaction chamber has been designed and is currently being fabricated in an attempt to improve the instrument sensitivity, an essential step as we push the instrument toward single-particle detection.
