Funds hazardous fuels on public and private land within the Municipality of Anchorage, Kenai Peninsula Borough, Matanuska Susitna Borough and Chugach State Park. Funds also support Community Wildfire Protection Plan development and Firewise Education. Chugach State Park- Fuel reduction planned along both sides of the gas line that runs through Anchorage and the park. Fuels will be thinned, limbed, and dead and downed trees will be removed. A fuel break will be constructed between subdivisions and Chugach State park. Firewood will be made available to the public. 100 acres to be treated and 20 jobs. Anchorage Wildfire Mitigation - Firewise home assessments will be conducted and tree work will be prescribed to reduce fuel loading on private property. Private tree companies to perform hazard tree removal work. Homeowners will be educated about Firewise principles. A hand crew will treat hazardous fuels on 75 acres of municipal and park land in the WUI. 22 jobs created. Kenai Peninsula Borough- Fuel reduction work to remove hazard trees along road corridors, reduce ground fuels on State park land, remove fuels from borough land adjacent to communities, reduce grass fuels in the WUI within CWPP areas and treat woody debris resulting from hazard fuel removal on private land. Approximately 230 jobs, 70 miles of roads treated and 3600 acres. Matanuska-Susitna Borough- Community Firewise Education Program including home assessments and Community Wildfire Protection Plan development. Land owner cost share program for hazardous fuels removal on private land. 24 jobs and 200 acres.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description MSB:The Big Lake Community Council CWPP core committee met once this quarter. The topic was planning for the Town Hall meeting on the CWPP scheduled for Friday May 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.The draft plan is being reviewed by core committee members. The event date was selected to include participation by Gary Marshall, Northwest Region Firewise representative who will be in Alaska at that time.Planning began in January for a Firewise Weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday May 3rd, 4th and 5th.There are four events planned for the weekend: the Big Lake CWPP Town Hall meeting on Friday evening, an Open House at the State Division of Forestry hangar in Palmer on Saturday from 11:00 to 2:00, a dessert social and presentation titled Firewise Neighborhoods to Fire Adapted Communities at the Willow Community Center on Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and a Sunday afternoon repetition of the Neighborhoods to Fire Adapted Communities program at the Central Mat-Su Public Safety Building in Wasilla.This winter?s project has been the compilation of a comprehensive data base of properties/residences that have been visited and rated for wildfire risk since our program began in 2004. Notations are included about fuel reduction on the property and data needed to enable mapping. This project will provide a complete picture of Wildfire Risk Ratings across the Borough throughout the duration of the program. AFD:Planning for 2013 field season.

Description of Jobs Created Fuels removal hand work is similar in nature to what is required to be an emergency firefighter in Alaska. Skill sets will include improved chainsaw use, pulaski use, brush cutting, line building (fuel break) working together as a team, and following leadership. Field data collection, plot sampling, reinforced mapping skills, GPS and compass use for the purpose of laying out project boundaries. Contracted mechanical hazard fuel removal work involves use of small dozer equipped with attachment to chip or masticate slash in place; or pile slash for burning or hauling. Retained jobs include cooperator staff members providing grant administration and coordination/development of fuel reduction projects. Seasonal jobs for the projects were extended this quarter and small projects were made available to local contractors.
