This award provides for ARRA Early Head Start Expansion funded to serve 45 children. The Early Head Start program provides family-centered services for low-income families with very young children (pre-birth to 3) to promote the healthy development of the children and families. Our program options include home based services and family child care services appropriate for the needs of our population. The Early Head Start program will partner with parents to ensure that children stay up to date in well health checks and immunizations. Children are screened and assessed to ensure that they developing cognitively and emotionally as they should. If a child needs further evaluation the program partners with other local agencies to ensure prevenative measures are taken. Early Head Start begins to transition children into other programs 6 months prior to their 3rd birthday. All children receive all meals according to a meal plan set by a physician and/or the recommended daily nutrition for a child according to their age.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description The Early Head Start program provides family-centered services for low-incime families with very young children (pre-birth-3)to promote the healthy development of the children and families. Early Head Start has served approximately 114 families through home base and center base services. The program has concentrated on child development, health, and family services. Several children have been identified and are now receiveing or have received services for developmental delays and health issues. Provided social, educational, health care and child care services to low-income pregnant mothers and families with children age birth to three. Staff made weekly home visits and also conducted socializations at the centers. Activities were planned together with families to foster each child's development, increase family literacy, and promote healthy parent-child relationships. Parents attended monthly Parent Group Education meetings covering topics such as healthy eating and diet, budgeting, communicating with your baby, adult education, child emotional health, and safe sleep practices for infants. Assisted expectant families in preparing for their new baby. Assisted parents with transitioning their children into Head Start or other preschool programs. Families were linked to community resources such as food, clothing, housing, child care, employment, English classes, health care and mental health counseling. Specific results and benefits expected are: 1) children, families and pregnant women are healthier and more aware about steps needed to for good health and well being, 2) basic child development improves and children with special needs were evaluated and receiving services, 3) families are educated about the development and education systems for their child and empowered to serve as a voice for their children 4) expectant mothers experience healthier pregnancies and in turn babies are carried full term and born with less complications.
