SANTA ANA, PUEBLO OF
The project is to restore 200 acres of Juniper Savannah to the historic conditions illustrated in the 1935 photography by implementing restoration treatments within previously delineated areas. The treatments will consist of:
• manually thinning encroaching tree densities to 100 foot spacing between trees in moderately dense areas and 60 foot spacing between trees in highly dense areas; and
• lopping and scattering slash to encourage perennial vegetation establishment; and
• extracting salvageable fuel wood to reduce fuel loads.
The project will partially support nine Pueblo employees for one year (3.5 FTE) and will provide approximately 100 cords of fuel wood to community members, for a cost savings of approximately $18,000.

The project proposes to restore 200 acres of Juniper Savannah to the historic conditions within previously delineated areas. The goals of the project are to reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire, reinstate a semi-natural fire regime, increase perennial herbaceous cover, and improve wildlife habitat within Juniper Savannah. The treatments will consist of: 1) manually thinning encroaching tree densities to 100 foot spacing between trees in moderately dense areas and 60 foot spacing between trees in highly dense areas; 2) lopping and scattering slash to encourage perennial vegetation establishment; and 3) extracting salvageable fuel wood to reduce fuel loads. The project began on October 1, 2010. During the reporting period, the crew thinned approximately 31 acres and extracted approximately 3,774 cubic feet (29 cords) of salvageable fuelwood. Since the project began, the crew has thinned 201 acres and extracted approximately 8,274 cubic feet (64 cords) of salvageable fuelwood. The field work and final reporting associated with this project are complete. |
