BIG SPRINGS MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, INC
The Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project expanded the capacity to provide primary and preventive health care services to a medically underserved population. Located in Southern Missouri, Reynolds County is a primary medical, mental health, and dental Health Professional Shortage Area. The project will address pressing facility needs. Construction of a new facility will increase the capacity of the Ellington Family Clinic and the Behavioral Health Program, two clinics in Missouri Highland's current scope. The Ellington Family Clinic, Behavioral Health clinic, a dental clinic, and the organization's administrative and financial offices were co-located within one large building located in Ellington. The area occupied by the Ellington Family Clinic incurred damage in the 2008 spring flood. Additionally, insufficient space prevents the employment of additional providers to meet increasing patient needs. State funding was utilized to purchase one acre of property, in an area located outside of the flood zone in a patient convenient area. The Ellington Family Clinic and the Behavioral Health program was relocated to the new site on March 7, 2011. The building includes 4,890 square feet of clinic space on the main level and an additional 775 square feet of storage/work space in the attic. The additional space, in the six clinic rooms, will allow additional providers to be employed. The Ellington Family Clinic currently employs four (4) full-time staff members including a physician, licensed practical nurse, medical assistant, and receptionist. Two staff members will be added. A nurse practitioner will be employed one-half time in year one and increased to full-time by year three. A medical assistant will be employed full-time in year one. It is anticipated that another receptionist will also be hired. The full-time nurse practitioner will serve 750 patients through 1,500 clinic visits each year. The project will lead to improvements in access to health services for underserved populations and enhance the health center?s effectiveness and efficiency. With the additional space, a full-time case manager was hired to serve the Ellington Family Clinic and additional sites.
