UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS
The grant's objectives support the mission of the NCMHD and the UVI Caribbean Exploratory Research Center's aim to enable academic, institutional and community partners to evaluate interventions designed to improve the health of Virgin Islanders. The project acknowledges the public concerns regarding the level of preparedness needed for public health institutions, health care providers and communities to recognize and respond effectively to a projected increase in health problems associated with climate change conditions. The specifc aims of the project are to 1) research and develop information supporting communications and strategies to address links between climate change and increasing public health challenges, specifically dengue and ciguatera, and 2) to develop an effective educational outreach program focused on the prevention and mitigation of health problems associated with dengue and ciguatera. It is expected that the project will produce appropriate informational and media products in support of communication and awareness in the general public and specific stratgies available to public health professionals regarding effective responses to the public health challenges associated with the environmental conditions that would be expected to result in an increased incidence of dengue and ciguatera in the Territory.

The purpose of this grant is to develop an effective educational outreach program focused on the prevention and mitigation of health problems associated with Dengue Fever and ciguatera. The one- hour, live television program broadcast on March 6th addressing climate change and public health issues in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean was used as the basis for the development of a DVD that was duplicated and distributed to 245 community groups, physican offices, schools, government offices and individuals in the Territory for their use as an information and education tool. The rest of the Quarter was spent monitoring the project website, beginning the development of Public Service Announcements on climate change, dengue and ciguatera, planning and executing the logistics associated with the upcoming Institute 3 of the project, and consulting with MUSC partners and Dr. Callwood. In addition, monthly reports were submitted to the Office of the Governor of the Virgin Islands as required.
