| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
The purpose of this project is to design effective mechanisms for unstructured networks and their coexistence with current IP networks.
During this quarter we developed a novel mechanism, SmartParcel, for efficient data distribution and offloading in unstructured dynamic mobile networks that are formed by smart mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc. The rapid growth of such mobile devices and applications has resulted in huge volume of global online digital content generated by those devices. Network traffic originating from them has made a multi-fold increase over the past few years and hence, it becomes increasingly important to achieve efficient data distribution and high content availability in those networks. Our proposed SmartParcel mechanism leverages collaborative data sharing among spatial-temporally co-existing mobile devices, in order to minimize the overall network data distribution cost in those networks. SmartParcel can ensure high service availability to the users in events of unavailability of access points, unavailable or limited cellular data connections, unavailability of 3G or LTE hardware etc. The technology we have been developing is mainly for Android mobile OS but the architecture can be extended to other available mobile software platforms such as iOS. Our trace-based simulations have demonstrated that our SmartParcel can achieve high data availability to users. The results obtained during this quarter will constitute an important part of the set of theoretic foundations and practical mechanisms for studying unstructured networks. |
