PUBLIC HEALTH, MASSACHUSETTS DEPT OF
Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) received a two year award of $928,138 in direct costs from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to support the Reducing Ethnic/Racial Asthma Disparities in Youth (READY) study. A no-cost extension was granted for 1 year to end on June 2012. Year 1 funding was $496,893 and Year 2 funding is $431,245.
The READY study assesses approaches to improving care for children with asthma. In the study, community health workers will work to integrate home-based environmental and educational intervention with clinical practice. It will examine how race, ethnicity, country of origin of parents, language, socioeconomic status, insurance status and education level of parents will influence the ability of the intervention to reduce health disparities. READY will be carried out at two inner-city asthma clinics in Boston and Springfield, Massachusetts.

To date, Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and its study partners have created eight (8) jobs. At the sub-recipient sites, four (4) positions were created for Community Health Workers and one (1) was created for a Clinical Research Coordinator. DPH created one (1) full-time position for the READY Study Coordinator, one (1) full-time position for the READY Study Epidemiologist, an Epidemiologist II position and (1) position for a part-time contracted study intern.
DPH has also retained five (5) positions: DPH Asthma Program Director, Boston Medical Center Principal Investigator, and Baystate Medical Center Principal Investigator. One (1) position for a Data Manager and one (1) for a Research Assistant were also retained. |
