The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) - A large scale, collaborative effort to characterize the genomic changes that occur in cancer. Currently, the three aspects of the project are to establish a.) a biospecimen core resource to collect clinical data on thousands of normal and tumor samples b.) multiple tissue source sites to collect 20-25 different tumors and their normal matched tissue samples, c.) a data coordinating center to manage access to the genomic sequencing and characterization data
Data Coordinating Center - The TCGA cancer genome project aims to molecularly characterize up to 25 tumor types over the next five years. A three year TCGA-pilot project was completed in the fall of 2009 and based on the success of this project a full production TCGA project has been initiated. The TCGA project will provide cancer researchers with a comprehensive molecular characterization of these tumor types that will help cancer researchers understand the genetic causes of cancer and identify promising targets for novel treatments. ARRA is funding the TCGA Data Management and Data Portal project which is a critical part of the TCGA project. The TCGA Data Management and Data Portal project processes the large TCGA data sets produced and makes these data available for cancer researchers.
