| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
CTSi received a Phase III commercial order for an ASROV pre-production unit. During 4Q11 CTSi completed and delivered this unit. The customer reported that they were very satisfied with the updated design. Some issues remain with hardware, primarily connectors. This will be updated one more time before this contract effort is closed out.Minimal development was required in software or firmware during 4Q11. The remaining updates to this report between now and the end of the contract period of performance will have little to report, since funding is exhausted. Overall, the project has been very successful in providing NASA the high-density avionics package needed for research flight testing of unmanned air vehicles, which is a growth area with significant spin-off potential into commercial and international markets.
No additional activities were performed on the contract effort since the last report. The contract was completed on 12/31/2011. Overall the effort was highly successful in developing the high-density avionics needed for NASA, university, and commercial research and development activities. |

| Description of Jobs Created |
This award created three new jobs: 1) Avionics System Engineer 2) Embedded Hardware Engineer 3) Embedded Software Engineer. The Avionics SE researches customer needs and future direction and translates those needs into a new design approach which satisfies the anticipated needs of research UAV customers. The Embedded Hardware Engineer translates the design into miniature, high-speed electronic hardware (such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays, FPGAs) that satisfies the safety-critical functions identified by the customer. The Embedded Software Engineer then builds micro-controller software for all of the non-safety-critical functions around the embedded hardware. The employment impact has had a ripple-effect into these areas: 1) retention of jobs within NASA and local contractors to do more research when the products built using these funds are available, which will in-turn stimulate new activity among aircraft manufacturers; 2) creation of jobs within CTSi in a related product area (a commercial research UAV) that is dependent on the products built using these RA funds. Without the RA funds, this award would not have happened, with a likely net effect of six to eight potential jobs lost in total in the near-term. The RA funding arrived "just in the nick of time" to save these project efforts and the jobs associated with them. Furthermore, because these RA funds provided an award to SBIR which requires a commercialization component, this award will lead to several new commercial activities related to increased automation in aviation (avionics, vehicles, safety), further stimulating the economy long-term.
