Literature review of potential impacts of overwater structures on Bull Trout in Lake Pend
General Background and Primary Goals
Bull Trout in Lake Pend Oreille have been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species
Act since 1998. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits overwater structures (e.g.,
recreational docks) on the lake; however the potential impacts of these overwater structures and
associated activities on bull trout are not well documented. The primary goal of this scientific
literature review will be to identify potential impacts of overwater structures (primarily
recreational docks) on bull trout populations in Lake Pend Oreille and to identify research
methodology to assess potential effects of recreational docks on bull trout.
Task 1: Perform a literature review of the potential impacts of overwater structures on bull
trout in Lake Pend Oreille.
To identify and locate scientific literature relevant to the task, the University of Idaho
Library system and databases will be used. Literature will be reviewed and summarized to
identify the potential impacts of overwater structures (e.g., recreational docks) to all life history
phases of bull trout in lacustrine settings. Included in this review will be potential impacts to
predators of juvenile bull trout and impacts to the dominant prey species of adult bull trout.
Furthermore, the impact on bull trout habitat by overwater structures will be discussed. Finally,
the results of the literature review will be discussed in relation to applicability in Lake Pend
Task 2: Identification of future research needs and methodology. Literature
collected for Task 1 (above) will be used to identify future research needs to understand the
impact, if any, of overhead structures (i.e., docks) on bull trout populations in Lake Pend Oreille
based on knowledge gaps identified in the literature review. General methodologies will be
proposed to assess potential cumulative effects of overwater structures on predator/prey
interactions involving bull trout populations in Lake Pend Oreille.
A written draft report will be submitted in January 2010 (exact dates to be determined at
the pre-work meeting). This report will have two concise chapters; the first of which will be
focused on Task 1 (above), while the second will be focused on task 2 (above). A final report
will be submitted to complete the project within 30 days of receipt of comments by the Corps on
the draft report. This report will incorporate and address review comments made on the draft
