The purpose of this project is to evaluate the quality of dredged material from the Federal navigation channels in Norfolk, Virginia region (Thimble Shoal Channel, Atlantic Ocean Channel, and Norfolk Harbor Channel Reaches) with respect to available placement options (upland placement and ocean placement). The project includes the collection of sediment cores and water samples; analytical testing of sediment, water and elutriates; ecotoxicological testing (water column bioassays, whole sediment bioassays, and bioaccumulation studies); and evaluation of test results in relation to placement criteria. The results of this program will allow for continued maintenance dredging of the channels to the authorized depth required to for safe passage of cargo, passenger, naval vessels into the Lower Chesapeake Bay and the Norfolk/Portsmouth/Hampton Roads region. In addition, the results of the evaluation will facilitate continued ocean placement of material from Thimble Shoal Channel and the Atlantic Ocean Channel and will possibility facilitate emergency ocean placement for material from the Norfolk Harbor Channel Reaches.
