CHRYSLER GROUP LLC
The proposed project will develop advanced PHEV technologies, and demonstrate and evaluate PHEVs across a wide range of geographic, climatic and operating environments. Results from the study will enable Chrysler to gain a better understanding of customer usage and operational needs, and ultimately consumer acceptance. The proposed program consists 3 phases across a 4 year period. Phase 1 includes vehicle integration and functional check of key PHEV components, and the bench validation of key components and sub-systems. During this phase, Chrysler will build 12 development PHEVs, accelerate development and validation, create supplier interfaces to finalize PHEV component and sub-system refinements, and develop tooling and equipment required to build fleet of demonstration vehicles. Phase 2 includes building 140 demonstration vehicles. Vehicles from current production models will be fit with PHEV systems. Additionally, vehicles will be prepped with data collection and remote diagnostics instrumentation and capabilities for fleet demonstration. At the end of the second phase, vehicles will be delivered to the demonstration partners for fleet testing. Phase 3 is the demonstration phase, during which the PHEVs will be subject to routine vehicle usage across 12 different partner locations. Data will be collected in order to evaluate the viability of PHEV systems under typical customer usage, understand typical consumer use of PHEV vehicles, inform development of HMI interfaces, and assess consumer comfort with and acceptance of PHEV technologies.
Program modification - In September of 2012, Chrysler Group LLC withdrew from service its test fleet of advanced PHEVs to conduct a battery-pack upgrade. This battery pack upgrade will be installed in vehicles and redeployed to partners during Phase 2 of the US Department of Energy’s PHEV Program. The upgraded battery pack will employ different battery chemistry than the battery pack used in Phase 1 of the program.
Phase 2 of the program will focus on optimizing reverse power-flow and smart charging, while further developing PHEV technology in order to make it viable for mass production. The battery upgrade and vehicle redeployment is expected to occur in 2013, and the PHEV program with the US Department of Energy is expected to end in 2014.

• Vehicle validation & tests descriptions and requirements for the battery upgraded Ram 1500 PHEVs were updated and completed
• Smart Charging development activities continued.
• Multi-Protocol Routers (MPRs) will be added to existing EVSEs and re-deployed Ram 1500 PHEVs that support Smart Charging.
• Reverse Power Flow development continued. A web page was added to the online interface to allow power level and flow duration selection
• Map Based Fuel Economy Initiative development continued. The goal is to incorporate more attributes in addition to driving history such as altitude, speed limits, or stop signs to develop route pre-learning
• Cells from 50 returned Ram 1500 PHEVs were analyzed. During deployment, 13 of the cells failed and were replaced due to high impedance or rapid self-discharge. These failed cells exhibited substantial gassing
• After the fleet was returned, cells from two vehicles that exhibited very good battery performance (no cells replacement or rapid self-discharges) were analyzed. Four of the cells showed signs of gassing, the gassing was minimal
• Initial results concluded that:
o A significant portion of the Phase I battery pack cells show evidence of gas generation regardless of electrical characteristics and gas generation increases over time. The cell gassing reduces the airflow gap between cells
o Cells that show low and uniform self-discharge rates also generate internal gas
o Capacity loss, accelerated self-discharge and impedance growth in a cell is not an indicator for propensity to generate gas
• Phase II battery packs and cell quantities were finalized
• Critical design review for the upgraded battery packs completed on March 4, 2013.
• Thermal packaging, component sourcing selections, wiring layouts, DVP&R planning and tooling release timing was completed
• Deliveries are currently on schedule to support the vehicle redeployment |
