UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY
This proposal will develop, out of a greater understanding of the major influencing factors of sustainable manufacturing, the most relevant and significant metrics for product/process design for sustainability. In parallel, the proposal will also establish a framework for product-process ontology for interoperability for sustainable manufacturing, leading to the development of predictive models for product and process performance with testbed validation.

Module 1: The Product Sustainability Index (ProdSI) methodology and the metrics continue to be validated in a case study of two generations of a consumer electronics product. In addition, LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) modeling is performed for a jet engine component comparing the use of two materials: Titanium and composites. Module 2: The product information model is extended to the pre-manufacturing stage of the products’ life-cycles for the case study at General Electric Aviation. Information about the carbon fiber, epoxy, plastic film and paint are integrated, based on information from suppliers and public literatures. Work on information modeling by the Syracuse team continues with expansion of their initial model to integrated product information models for ProdSI assessment. Module 3: A comprehensive modeling and evaluation effort has been underway towards achieving improved product and process performance in cryogenic machining process, with focus on the appropriate application of cryogenic coolant. During the preliminary work, it has been shown that the amount of cryogenic coolant applied has a critical impact on the ProcSI evaluation results. Module 4: The expanded integrated product information model including the four life-cycle stages and 6Rs, along with the ProdSI methodology, was adapted with advanced and relevant modeling techniques. Validation of this new integrated product information model has just been completed by our participating research group at Syracuse University. Module 5: ProdSI evaluation for two generations of printer cartridges has been extended to include a customer-focused model for our partnering company. For the aerospace product case study, LCA work has begun and this will be completed together with the participating GE team. The evaluation of composite blade for its pre-manufacturing stage has been carried out, and the evaluation of the manufacturing, use and post-use stages is in progress.
