Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

SKIDMORE COLLEGE

The award supports the acquisition of a suite of instruments suitable for elemental analysis (atomic absorption and x-ray fluorescence), ion analysis (ion chromatography), molecular analysis (infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) as well as direct functional analysis (a CO2 and H2O gas analyzer). This suite of instruments will allow us to acquire diverse sets of data including temporal and spatial variation of dissolved species in aquatic and terrestrial environments, composition and spatial variation of complex polymers in cell walls, ion penetration of polyelectrolyte multilayer materials, bioavailability of heavy metals, identification of inorganic and organic synthesis products, and analysis of plaster and pigments in Maya murals. In providing shared technology to address basic and applied questions that link composition with the structure and function of biological, chemical and anthropological systems, the award will have a transformative effect on research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Project Title MRI-R2: From Molecules to Ecosystems: Establishment of the Skidmore Analytical Interdisciplinary Laboratory (SAIL)
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Undergraduate Colleges
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The primary focus of the Instrumentation Manager (IM) is on user training, facility supervision, instrument maintenance and operations, outreach and the development of new laboratory pedagogies that are reliant on the SAIL laboratory instrumentation funded under this grant. As of the first pay period of this quarter, the IM's salary and related costs have converted to a permanent College supported personnel line in the Department of Chemistry. The SAIL facility is also supported by student research assistants who have been trained and certified on the instrumentation. Instrument usage in the 1st quarter of 2013 increased by 47.03% over the 4rd quarter of 2012. Representative research and pedagogical projects this quarter include: development of new pedagogies in Analytical Chemistry (pXRF); Controls on the Uptake of Nitrogen & Phosphorus & the Coupling Nutrient Cycles in Headwater Streams (IC); Lead Load in Web-Weaving vs. Jumping Spiders after Acute Exposure to Lead Acetate (AAS); Growing Algae in Wastwater to Produce Ethanol (GC-MS); development of new laboratory modules for General and Organic Chemistry (IC, AAS, GC-MS, FTIR). The SAIL instruments are currently being used in courses including, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Conservation and Use of Forested Landscapes and student independent capstone research projects. Students are being introduced to state of the art techniques, developing new analytical skills, learning the theory and when and how each instrument can be appropriately utilized. Furthermore, it is estimated that 7 - 10 Faculty Student Collaborative Research projects will use the resources of SAIL this summer.
Jobs Created 1.00
Description of Jobs Created Instrument Manager(IM)- The IM works with students and faculty from Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, and other departments, as well as area institutions, on research applications for, and operation of, the instrumentation. The IM trains individuals on the use and operation of the different analytical instruments, provides consultation to faculty and students on how to design research and analytical instrumentation utilization protocols that enhance their teaching and research and make appropriate use of the instrumentation portfolio. The IM also delivers formal science education programming (both classroom and hands on training) related to the use and functionality of the analytical instruments. Furthermore the IM develops recommendations for the acquisition of new instrumentation and negotiates and supervises contracted servicing of the instruments. The IM is charged with the responsibility to ensure that our portfolio of analytical instrumentation is properly maintained and prepped for classes and research, including Summer Collaborative Research. The IM is also responsible for the delivery of informal science education about the use and functionality of the instruments to several outreach programs involving SAIL, including the Math and Science Open House and Camp Northwoods.
