Project Title MRI-R2: Development of Hyperspectral Optical Property Instrumentation (HOPI) for Biomedical and Environmental Research
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description Higher Education
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The activities accomplished for the first quarter of 2013 include the following: 1)purchase of the super-continuum laser has been approved, and order has been placed 2)to support micro-biological research of interest to collaborators on campus, the hyper-spectral system will be adapted for use with the microscope 3) the lab has acquired new coral species for the aquarium. 4)New computer memory and fast data disks have been purchased to handle the massive hyper-spectral data sets 5) the lab supports diverse group of students including those from under-served groups. Two students (1male Hispanic and 1female Hispanic) received funding from Title V program Two brothers in mechanical engineering are performing undergraduate research using coral and oyster shells. One African American student continued his work on using the hyper-spectral system and a thermal imager to detect surface defects on metal castings. A conference paper was presented at a conference in Galveston Texas in February 2013 and two student oral presentations and poster presentations were given at the 12th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Project is over 90% complete.
