UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY
The goal of the proposed project is to install a geothermal heat pump system to provide heating and cooling to the planned 184,533 SF, multi-story, 500-bed new apartment-style student housing to be constructed at the University at Albany's Uptown campus. The proposed geothermal heat pump system will provide approximately 315 tons of cooling and 4,263,000 Btu/hr of heating. The project also includes ongoing maintenance, operations and continuous commissioning to optimize system performance and ensure that the system operates per original design intent such that estimated energy and cost savings are realized. The proposed geothermal heat pump system is estimated to reduce annual electricity usage by 400,000 kilowatt-hours and annual heating fuel usage by 12,000 MMBtu resulting in annual utility cost savings of approximately $135,000. The recurring utility cost savings will help the University offset the cost of retaining at least 2 to 4 of its facility management staff at a time of severe operational budget cuts. In addition, the system will reduce the new building's carbon footprint by approximately 1,600,000 lbs of CO2 per year. It is estimated that the cost to offset 1.6 Million pounds of CO2 is approximately $10,000 per year. The project will also create 6-7 engineering jobs worth $650,000 and 16-38 construction jobs worth $1.5 Million. The project will drive the need for specialized and skilled workers in the design and construction community and lead to investment in the training and education of the local workforce.

The University continued to collect trend data from the Siemens Energy Management System on the geothermal heat pump system. The electrical meters associated with the Student Housing project were installed and reports for collecting 15-minute interval data were setup. The trend reports and electric interval data reports are transmitted on a weekly and monthly basis to CDH Energy Corporation, a DOE Consultant.
The University has retained the services of Genesys Engineering, the original commissioning agent on the project, for the next 3 years to assist with post-occupancy consistent commissioning. A post-occupancy commissioning kick-off meeting was held in March. The University has assembled a team consisting of building operators, building management system (BMS) operator, controls vendor (Siemens), University architect and construction manager, University Energy Officer and Sustainability Director to assist the commissioning agent and ensure continued optimized performance of the building and the GSHP system.
Based on metered usage from Dec 2012 to March 2013, the actual energy usage of the building and the geothermal heat pump system is within 2% of the modeled energy usage. The University hosted DASNY Sustainability Director for a tour of the building. |
