A low-cost optical-based instrument is proposed for the real-time diagnosis of urinary tract infections (UTI) at the point of care. A primary innovation of the instrument is the incorporation of inexpensive mass produced optical components such as high power LEDs for light sources and WEB-based cameras for detectors to image and quantify fluorescent stained bacteria directly in urine specimens. Integral to this approach is the use of a disposable ?dipstick? for sampling and preparing the urine specimen for analysis. A four-month feasibility program is proposed to develop a test platform and investigate the technical feasibility of this approach.
