THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA
The University of SD's Growing Our Own Distance Learning Program (GOODLP) targets transitioning military personnel & unemployed veterans for immediate entry-level job placements in long-term care centers or acute care hospitals. It also provides opportunities for newly placed & incumbent healthcare workers to access & progress on a nursing pathway. Specifically, GOODLP identifies qualified military personnel & veterans for positions as Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, & Registered Nurses & then connects these candidates to employers with vacancies. GOODLP works with employers to ensure that upon placement in employment, the workers are able to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) through The University's Nursing Program. The program also enables incumbent ADNs to participate in the University of South Dakota's online Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Proposed Outcomes: the grantee will serve 1,066 participants, 582 will be awarded certification or degrees. 201 will complete the education/training activities and be placed into training-related employment.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
Grant focus areas: 1) recruit transitioning military personnel for employment in entry level healthcare positions and refer to allied health training (AHT) or AS Nursing program; 2) recruit incumbent healthcare workers to AHT or AS Nursing program; 3) recruit incumbent RNs to RN-BSN program; 4) provide nursing faculty development towards MS and doctoral degrees; and 5) develop a mobile simulation unit (MSU). During Q3, 27 new participants were served with cumulative participants served at 1,414 (46% are Veterans and 54% are incumbent healthcare workers). In Q3, 17 began training primarily by enrolling in RN-BSN courses; 781 participants cumulatively have started a training program during grant period. 72 have completed a training program (MSN, RN-BSN, ASN, or AHT) during Q3 with a cumulative grant total of 219 having completed a training program. During Q3, 19 entered training-related employment (cumulative total of 69) + 12 entered post-training non-training related employment during Q3 (cumulative total of 80); in addition, per the SOW, an additional 47 cumulative persons have been assisted to secure employment who did not require training, resulting in a total of number of those employed within the grant period to be 128. An additional 75 are currently being assisted for employment in assertive manner who have completed training thus far; approximately 10 FTEs are providing employment-seeking support to grant participants. Interest from candidates/employers in the AS Nursing program has significantly been thwarted related to healthcare market demands and desire for the BSN prepared nurse. Majority of grant efforts are dedicated to assisting all participants to complete training programs and gain employment by grant-end 6/30/2013. A large number of completers will end training programs in last 3 months of grant. The mobile simulation unit (MSU) has completed 28 trips since implementation. |
