UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) requests grant support to purchase a state-of-the-art whole-body 3 Tesla (3T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to perform advanced anatomic, functional, spectroscopic and physiologic imaging for biomedical research. The requested 3T MRI scanner is urgently needed to (a) accommodate a rapidly increasing number of NIH-funded projects, (b) replace an early generation, out-dated, un-upgradable 3T scanner with cutting-edge 3T technologies, and (c) establish the first-ever 3T imaging facility dedicated to research at UIC.

| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
During this quarter, the remaining peripheral devices for the 3T scanner have been finalized. The oscilloscope ordered in Quarter 1 of FY13 has been received and implemented to analyze and develop new pulse sequences. An MRI safe EEG system was purchased, received, installed, and validated. EEG system training was provided to our staff as well as researchers from labs of NIH funded investigators, including Drs. Phan and Pavuluri. The remaining balance of the grant has been committed to purchasing a 32 channel whole brain array and a transmit/receive coil for human spectroscopic imaging. These components will enable future research and growth of the 3T MRI research program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). In order to comply with stringent state policies regarding procurement methods of such equipment, a no cost extension was requested and granted. We are fully confident in our ability to obtain the final peripheral equipment for the 3T scanner by June 17, 2013. With the existing 3T MRI scanner and its peripheral devices, we continue serving the NIH-funded investigators across the UIC campus. All NIH-funded projects are progressing very well and have shown excellent productivity. To ensure sustained success of the 3T MRI research program at UIC, we recently conducted an outreach program to encourage new investigators to use this state-of- the-art imaging facility. Lastly, with strong institutional support, we have expanded our center staff by hiring a business manager who has been providing critical support to the research faculty in the MR center as well as investigators on campus.
