ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC SECURITY
The purpose of this grant is to teach workers the skills required in emerging industries including energy efficiency and renewable energy. To highlight the important role States play in building a national green economy, the US DOL is investing in workforce sector strategies that target energy efficiency and renewable energy industries as well as other green industries. In Arizona specifically, the Arizona’s Green Skills Pipeline to a Clean Energy Economy project will be implemented through the Arizona's State Energy Sector Partership's (SESP) plan to identify and align key partners. Training services will be delivered through local and regional project teams, led by local WIBs or regional consortia of Boards and their One Stop Career Center delivery systems. Job placement services will be integrated with targeted training for green energy industries.
Arizona's State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) selected two energy efficient and renewable energy industries:
A) Energy-efficient building; green construction; retrofit industries; solar water heating; and energy efficiency assessment industry serving residential, commercial, and or industrial customers.
B) The electric power industry, including renewable energy: Smart Grid, solar, wind and thermal power.
An example of occupations targeted in the two energy efficient sectors:
Electricians, linemen, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, construction equipment operators, architects, industrial machinery mechanics, installation helpers, alternative energy techs, metal fabricators, electrical equipment assemblers, fabricators, solar installers and more.

Maricopa County: SESP grant funding has provided training opportunities for 1,374 participants, that’s 139% of the 991 goal. Through strong partnerships with other local areas, training providers, and employers, the Central Region has exceeded all performance measures at a lower cost than originally projected.
Yavapai County: Of the 45 individuals trained , 24 remain employed in the Solar industry. REC Solar, a local solar install & maintenance employer has retained 11 men who were trained under the SESP program. Solar City, another local employer, has retained 2 SESP trained participants. A new solar project in Gila Bend is currently starting up. Wilson Electric and McCarthy Buildings will be calling back participants who had been laid off when the last project in Globe was completed. Wilson is calling back participants this month and McCarthy will be taking SESP participant referrals from NACOG to begin in April. Some individuals, however, are not interested in working out of the area and have secured other solar as well as non solar related employment.
Pima County: Program activities for the SESP program included $18,207.00 in training expenditures. $72,995.82 was paid to grant sub-recipients. |
