| Quarterly Activities/Project Description |
Tasks worked on during the 6th Quarter -- Task 1.E: Map the Na conductivity and strength of BASE samples as a function of fabrication, composition, and processing conditions. Flexural strength and conductivity studies are complete and provided the impact of processing/conversion conditions on the Na conductivity. The primary goal of this task is to ensure that optimized process conditions required to produce flat BASE parts do not negatively impact the conductivity. Task 3: Cathode Development -- The objective of Task 3 is to develop cathode materials and cell design for planar sodium battery; worked on shimless cell design to maximize accessibility of sodium in anode chamber, addition of Fe to Ni cell and carbon wick for homogenous distribution of melt; Phase II, Task 4.A: Establish system controls necessary to ensure performance life and safety of final demo module. Progress is being achieved in identifying the battery control architecture. A block diagram showing the controls layout and the logic needed has been completed. Phase II, Task 4.B: Design and brass board demonstration of system controls: The preliminary design of the control system is well developed and is being reviewed for simplicity and cost effectiveness. Phase II, Task 5.A: Install & validate remaining process equipment: Significant progress has been made toward this milestone, most of the equipment has been ordered and received with only the test equipment and a glove box chiller not received yet. Phase II, Task 5.B: Transfer component processes from PNNL to EPT. Close interface with PNNL has allowed EPT to attain valuable progress in the transfer of technology from PNNL. |
