Contracts - AWARD SUMMARY

LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL SECURITY, LLC

The objective of the National Advanced Biofuels Consortium (NABC) is to develop cost-effective technologies that supplement petroleum-derived fuels with advanced ?drop-in? biofuels that are compatible with today?s transportation infrastructure and are produced in a sustainable manner. Our overarching goal is to expedite transfer of the resulting biofuel technology to industrial practice, in order to contribute as rapidly as possible to the national and EERE objectives of increased U.S. energy security, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and new economic opportunities. The LANL program in the National Advanced Biofuels Consortium comprises tasks in catalysis and modeling for the Catalytic Conversion of Sugars process strategy research thrust in the Consortium. In addition, LANL will provide on an as-needed, cost-recovery basis, specialized genomic sequencing analysis in support of other process strategy research in the Consortium. Dr. David Thorn is the lead for the LANL program in this Consortium. Specifically, LANL is responsible for the following tasks: ? Conversion by Chemical Catalysis ? Investigate chemistry and develop catalysts for low-temperature condensation and cross-condensation among sugars, dehydrated sugar products, and condensable pyrolysis products, to provide longer-chain hydrocarbon precursors; and investigate reduction reactions that convert these precursors to hydrocarbons. These processes will be important for upgrading sugar and pyrolysis components of processed biomass. As improved catalyst compositions are identified, develop these compositions into forms best suited for actual process conditions. ? Modeling ? Use molecular modeling to guide improvements in catalysts and catalytic processes for condensation reactions (re Task 1), and for other reactions in complex mixtures including effects of mineral matter.
