UNIVERSITY CORPORATION AT MONTEREY BAY
This primary objective of this cooperative program is to deploy virtualization technologies to build a community-focused data and modeling collaborative based on the Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS). Using hardware visualization, this new infrastructrue will allow direct access to hardware/software, data and model results from NASA funded activities, accelerating future research and applications development. The three key areas of focus of this project are hardware/software virtualization infrastructure that allows users to create custom environments for data access, analysis and modeling; community web collaboration platform for easy knowledge sharing; and development of a prototype of the collaborative through integration with TOPS data, models and existing user community. The infrastructure will be built in collaboration with the NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division (NAS) at NASA Ames Research Center. Combining NASA expertise with the expertise of CSUMB's Division of Science and Environmental Policy (DSEP) in ecosystem modeling, remote sensing and computing technologies, the Cooperative Agreement will provide specialized training and research opportunities to DSEP students.

OBJECTIVES
1. Continuous improvement to NEX web portal.
2. Collaborative facility testing.
3. Complete evaluation of global Landsat WELD processing results.
4. Continue migrating software to NASA Advanced Supercomputing Division (NAS).
5. Continue data acquisition.
STATUS:
Web Portal: We released another intermediate version of the NEX web portal that addressed user requests as well as additional presentation requirements. The portal has almost 600,000 hits between October and December of 2011. It can be accessed at: http://nex.arc.nasa.gov.
Collaborative Facility: We tested some of the components during our first virtual workshop with the Multi-scale Synthesis and Terrestrial Biospheric Model Intercomparison Project (MsTMIP).
Global Landsat/WELD: We completed evaluation of global WELD Landsat product during which we considered both science evaluation as well as algorithm efficiency. We integrated a new version of WELD-browse code that was previously the least efficient component and the new version has improved the efficiency by a factor of 10. We are currently integrating a new version of the WELD core algorithm.
Software Migration: We migrated and set-up additional software components including VisTrails (workflow and provenance management system). We also developed a generic plug-in framework that can be used to deploy ecosystem models on both shared-memory and distributed-memory architectures and the system was tested on the TOPS 1km model.
Data Acquisition: We are actively expanding our data acquisitions and have acquired over 1,300,000 high-resolution Landsat scenes and number of global L3 and L4 and L1B MODIS products. We have acquired the newly released global 30m DEM from ASTER instrument.
