Contracts - AWARD SUMMARY
TRUSTEES OF PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, THE
Work Authorization No. AT/CH15/10/ARRA-6, Fusion Energy Sciences - Infrastructure Improvements for Innovative Confinement Concepts Experiments (2005350): This project funds infrastructure improvements to Innovative Confinement Concepts experiments at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), which is managed and operated by Princeton University under a contract with the Department of Energy. These upgrades will significantly improve the near-term chances of discovering better ways to confine plasmas and to understand the properties of these plasmas in support of fusion energy research. Better diagnostics, heating systems, etc. will allow measurements of key plasma parameters which will facilitate improved understanding of plasma behavior. There are three tasks at PPPL funded by this project: (1) upgrades to the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment (LTX) in order to adequately investigate the consequences of low recycling boundaries on magnetically confined plasmas; these upgrades include completion of a full scale Ohmic power supply, reinstalling toroidal field cooling, installation of an edge scattering diagnostic, and siting of a diagnostic neutral beam; (2) fabrication of an X-ray crystal spectrometer for the Large Helical Device (LHD), a stellarator operating in Japan, to support PPPL's stellarator fusion research; in addition, supplemental funding to the base stellarator program is provided to develop an improved equilibrium reconstruction tool (computer hardware/software) for LHD; and (3) upgrade of the Princeton Field Reversed Configuration (PRFC) experimental facility to explore the physics of transport and stability in a FRC plasma sustained by a novel radio-frequency heating method; the upgrades include fabrication of a larger vacuum vessel with better diagnostic access, internal magnetic loops, and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) flux conservers (FC) and an upgrade to the heating system.

Lithium Tokamak eXperiment (LTX) upgrades: The hardware installation for the edge Thomson scattering system has been finished. This includes the mounting of the collection lens and the optical fibers for coupling it to the polychromators, and making the data acquisition system functional. Files can now be archived from multiple digitizer channels after each LTX discharge. This project is complete. |
