RECTOR & VISITORS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
Supplementary funds are requested to purchase three items of equipment that are needed for research supported by this grant. Over the 24 years of funding of this grant there has been great difficulty in maintaining our equipment needs. One item requested is a plasma cleaner, routinely used in the preparation of grids for electron microscopy (EM). The present unit that we want to replace was built by the PI almost 25 years ago and has become increasingly unreliable. A second item is a carbon evaporator that is also routinely used in depositing thin carbon support films on EM grids. We currently have been using a carbon evaporator in another laboratory that does not produce as uniform a coat as the unit requested. The third item is an ultralow freezer. Our current unit, which stores our precious samples, is almost 20 years old and is plagued by ice buildup.
The structures of nucleoprotein complexes are important for understanding events from cancer to bacterial pathogenesis. The equipment items requested will aid us in these studies that could have a direct impact on many areas of human health.
