The Republic of Palau's Communities Putting Prevention to work initiative, funded through the American Recovery Reinvestment Act of 2009, will improve health outcomes for children and adults through territory wide policy and environment changes. There are three health policy development targets for the project: 1) school lunch program policy to increase access to fruits and vegetables; 2) worksite wellness policy to increase physical activity; and 3) ban on sale of single/lose cigarettes to reduce initiation of youth tobacco use.

Quarterly Activities/Project Description Nutrition / Physical Activity: established a School Gardening Project in four public elementary schools, a Biggest Loser Project with nine teams, and an elementary & High School Obesity project. Reducing Youth Access to Tobacco: conducted community projects including outreach programs, produced a cookbook, educated decision makers regarding the harmful effects of tobacco use, and implemented new tobacco policy. The campaigns and projects are now complete and this is our final report.
