SOUTHEAST ALASKA GUIDANCE ASSOCIATION
National Park Service - Exotic Plant Management Team used SAGA's 8-person AmeriCorps crews to remove invasive plant species in 7 of Alaska's National Parks during the 2010 season: Denali Nat'l Park - 8wks, Glacier Bay Nat'l Park - 4wks, Katmai Nat'l Park 2wks, Kenai Fjords Nat'l Park - 3wks, Klondike Gold Rush Nat'l Park - 4wks, Sika National Historic Park - 4wks, Wrangell St. Elias Nat'l Park 4wks. This service was accomplished through manual labor - pulling, digging, and cutting to remove infestations identified over the last 5 years in the parks noted above. The intent was to remove and/or limit the spread of non-indigenous invasive plants. SAGA's crew was also involved in: surveying for invasive plants, monitoring infestations, collecting and cultivating the seeds of native plants, as well as participating in educational activities pertaining to the containment of invasive plants. Completed projects met NPS resource management standards.
