SHARPC continues to make significant progress in addressing the usability, workflow, and cognitive support challenges relating to the adoption of EHRs (electronic health records). SHARPC has focused on the following areas:
1. EHR (Electronic Health Record) usability and workflow: Evaluation and Design
2. Cognitive support for clinical comprehension
3. CDS (clinical decision support) adaptation to local settings
4. Automated Clinical Summarization
5. Cognitive information design and visualization
We continue to make progress in reducing barriers for conducting usability assessments through the development of a software tool. We are demonstrating how UCD (user centered design) can lead to safe and more usable interfaces and are generating practical guidance on how to design safer and more usable EHRs that meet MU (meaningful use). The research group is working on usability tutorials and guidelines that will help vendors with meeting the 2014 certification requirements for safety enhanced design. These guidelines are focused on medication management related tasks such as e-prescribing, medication lists, allergy lists and drug-drug interactions.
We have also recruited and engaged a Vendor Liaison position, for 6 months, with the goal of promoting collaboration opportunities among the University, the federal government (ONC), and EHR vendor industry leaders relating to usability and patient safety in EHR product and production timelines; assessing vendor community needs related to UCD and usability and response to SHARPC?s tools; and informing EHR usability policy.
We have also initiated the development of a comprehensive plan to more effectively disseminate the methods, tools and guidelines associated with this project. |

Dr Elmer Bernstam serves as a domain expert to help guide the design of the visualization framework and tolls on Project 4. He will also provide both clinical and informatics input into the project. Dr Trevor Cohen leads Project 2A and researches knowledge structures involved in diagnostic and therapeutic decision making in medicine, as well as the development of methods to simulate these knowledge structures in order to provide meaningful cognitive support in the EHR context. Dr Amy Franklin uses her expertise in Cognitive Linguistics to study mental models of doctor patient interaction and its relationship to EMR in Project 2A. Dr Yang Gong is charged with compiling an interactive set of guidelines for EHR developers and users that supports safety enhanced design. Dr Kevin Hwang is a clinical collaborator and domain expert in Internal Medicine providing support for the guidelines project. Dr Sriram Iyengar serves as Co-Investigator of the Lab Core and is assisting with the further development of the turf software. Dr Peter Killoran has joined as an investigator on Projects 1A and 2A to contribute to guideline development and knowledge structures.
