FLORENCE-DARLINGTON TECHNICAL COLLEGE (INC)
Power Up - Pee Dee is designed to provide occupational skill training to individuals in the region who are unemployed/underemployed or dislocated workers - specifically for employment in the electric power industry. Existing training programs as well as newly designed training programs will be utilized to meet the area's current and future employer needs. Grant funds will be used to hire staff to administer the grant activities, to provide professional development and staff training, to hire classroom instructors, to purchase necessary equipment and to make equipment upgrades; however, the bulk of the funds will be used for participant training costs and support services. The goal of the grant is to provide training to approximately 4,000 workers over a three year span and to assist in job development and job placement. It is expected that the program's outcomes will have a long-lasting and significant positive impact on the region's economic development.

The No Cost Extension Request was approved for the Power Up project allowing us to continue to provide job placement, follow-up and retention services to our participants through June 30, 2013. Staff has been working diligently to obtain employment information on program graduates as well as provide job placement assistance to those who are still seeking employment. Notably, 14 of our Pipefitter graduates were recently hired by Carolina Energy earning salaries in excess of $20 per hour. Postcards were sent out to 300 former participants inviting them to a workshop designed to inform them of other resources that are available to them in the Pee Dee area. Representatives from the local One Stop, the WIA Program, SC Works, the ASSIST Program, the SUCCESS Center, and the FDTC Job Placement Office will be available to provide information and answer questions. Performance update: Enrolled (1302), Successful Completions (864/1302 = 66%), Earned Credential (797/864 = 92%), Employed (225/864 = 26%), Training Related Employments of those participants who became employed (112/225 = 50%). In addition, there were 7 non-incumbent worker participants who became employed prior to their training completion date and 174 incumbent worker employments not keyed into the RAD system. If these were counted in the employment performance, our employment rate would become 47% (406/864). |
