Grants - AWARD SUMMARY

BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY

Increasing focus on biofuels accentuates the need for accurate property values for these compounds. This project aims to produce a critically evaluated database of thermophysical properties for 30 important biofuel compounds. The project will include literature review, measurement, prediction, and critical review to provide the best possible recommended property values.

Project Title Biofuels Thermophysical Properties
Project Status More than 50% Completed
Final Project Report Submitted No
Project Activities Description General Science
Quarterly Activities/Project Description The evaluation and inclusion of pure-component data into the database is nearly completed. The remaining compounds are in the final stages of evaluation, and we estimate that they will be ready for inclusion in the database in the next 2-3 months. Experimental measurements of pure component properties including vapor pressure, density, and viscosity have proceeded for several compounds which were lacking adequate published data. Density measurements have been performed with an Anton Paar oscillating tube densitometer; viscosity measurements have been performed using a Schott Geräte viscometer. An apparatus for measuring vapor pressure via the mass loss transpiration method has been acquired for measurement of very low vapor pressures. Additionally a stainless steel apparatus with direct pressure measurement is in use for compounds with moderate vapor pressure. Experimental results for these pure component properties are being included in the previously outlined Design Institute for Physical Properties 801 evaluation process. The paper Joe Bell submitted to the Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data on the experimental measurements he performed has been accepted and published. The article was published on the web March 11, 2013 and is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/je301348z. These data have been added to the biofuels database.
Jobs Created 1.24
Description of Jobs Created 0.98 student research assistant jobs were retained. 0.26 other administrative jobs were retained. The jobs that were paid from this project are the equivalent of 1.24 full time jobs. To get the FTE, the total number of hours worked was divided by 520 hours (the number of FTE hours in a quarter).
