FUND FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN NEW YORK, INC.
NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) will use funds for a mix of interventions designed to significantly expand physical activity, increase good nutrition, and reduce obesity through policy, systems and environmental change. The proposed interventions build on existing programs, leverage recently enacted policies, and identify appropriate areas for further policy change. These interventions have been selected from CDC’s evidence-based menu of media, access, point-of-decision, price, and social support strategies.

CPPW-Obesity Sugary Drink Survey
Abt SRBI conducted a random-digit-dial (RDD) based cell phone and landline telephone survey among New Yorkers in March 2013. Over 2,000 respondents completed this RDD survey and an online 24-hour dietary recall of 488 respondents, recruited as a sub-sample from the phone survey.
In consultation with DOHMH, Abt SRBI revised and finalized the RDD survey instrument. The contractor developed sampling protocol and a sampling plan to maximize the response rate, and setup subcontracts with the online recall vendor (Westat). In addition, Abt SRBI produced training materials for RDD phone surveyors, conducted an in-house training session, and oversaw all data collection. For the online 24-hour dietary recall, Abt SRBI attended to all respondents’ IT issues and carried out reminder calls and e-mails to ensure the maximum number of recruited participants completed the recall.
Throughout the data collection process, Abt SRBI provided summary updates several times per week to report progress, and included disposition reports detailing the results of each call attempt. They created usable datasets for the RDD-based survey as well as the online 24-hour recall survey. In coordination with DOHMH requests, the contractor ran preliminary analyses and created a topline report of the highest-priority findings for DOHMH. |

15.28 FTEs were funded by CPPW Obesity during Quarter 1 of 2013. The FTEs include the following positions:
-The CPPW Enhanced Evaluation Project Coordinator, who coordinates the daily activities related to this grant, including: conducting activities as part of the CPPW-Obesity Core Team; completing CDC reporting requirements; developing contracts with consultants and contractors; and conducting data analyses related to the grant activities.
-The Special Evaluation Data Analyst, who manages the implementation of the Special Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) required by the CPPW Obesity grant.
-The Survey Research Coordinator, who is responsible for executing the evaluation plan as designed; contacting and scheduling interviews with participating child care centers; conducting on-site interviews with child care center staff and directors; and coordinating pre- and post- data collection with other program staff and data collectors.
-The Fitnessgram Data Analyst, who works with DOE and DOHMH staff on quality assurance assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of the school measurement equipment and training. The Data Analyst also works on developing reportable metrics and conducting detailed statistical analyses of the FITNESSGRAM data and provides data analysis support to program staff.
-The CPPW Administrator, who tracks project expenses, prepares financial reports, and establishes purchasing and contract needs.
-The Coordinator of the Farmer's Market Project, who is responsible for the evaluation of farmers’ market-based nutrition programming.
-The Communication Specialist who is responsible for the creation of the CPPW final report.
-The Food Standards Evaluator who is responsible for the evaluation of and dissemination of findings related to CPPW Food Standards.
-Two interns who aided with evaluation and closeout activities.
-The Geographer (subrecipient through Columbia University) who analyzed geospatial data.
-Abt SRBI, Inc was responsible for designing and conducting the Sugary Drink evaluation and employed staff responsible for sampling, management and programming of the survey instrument. |
