GOODWILL INDUSTRIES INTERNATIONAL, INC.
Goodwill Industries International (GII), a national Pathways Out of Poverty grantee, has been funded to implement a national model for worker training and placement in high growth and emerging green industry sectors in six communities -- five urban areas and one three-county rural area. The urban areas are Atlanta, Georgia; Austin, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; Phoenix, Arizona; and Washington, DC. The rural counties are in Michigan. The sub-grantees serving these communities are: Goodwill of North Georgia (Atlanta), Goodwill Industries of Central Texas (Austin), Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont (Charlotte, NC), Goodwill of Central Arizona (Phoenix), Goodwill of Greater Washington (DC) and Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, Inc. (MI).
With GII support, the sub-grantees will implement the Goodwill Goes Green (G3) model in six diverse high need communities to help the hardest to place job seekers secure green-industry related jobs. We intend to serve 1,300 individuals, with 997 beginning training services in the Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy (EE/RE) industries of energy-efficient building construction and retrofit; renewable electric power; and energy efficiency assessment. Of those beginning training, 664 (67%) will receive certification. Of the 764 who complete the education and training services, 621 (93%) will be placed into unsubsidized employment. We believe we can accomplish these outcomes based on nearly a century of providing job training and placement services for people with disadvantages and disabilities.
The program model is divided into four phases: Phase I: Recruitment, Intake, Assessment, and Development of Individualized Career Plan; Phase II: Career Readiness / Skill Training; Phase III: Job Placement; and Phase IV: Job Retention and Career Advancement. The model moves job seekers from intensive individual assessment through to job placement and includes career planning, transitional jobs, contextualized pre-employment training (with subjects such as soft skills , environmental literacy, financial literacy and occupational basic skills), and occupational skills training. Once placed, the workers will be supported by our Goodwills and their local partners to help them retain their jobs and advance within their chosen industry, along clear career pathways. A total of 70% (467) will retain their employment for two quarters subsequent to placement.
Our sub-grantees have established partnerships with more than 70 local businesses, labor organizations, workforce development institutions, unions, faith/community-based organizations, and especially colleges and trade schools, leveraging $3,383,976 to benefit the job seekers in the G3 program.
