During the quarter beginning January 1, 2013, Ohio Development Services Agency staff within the Office of Strategic Business Investments continue to monitor progress made by subgrantees, troubleshoot possible complication hindering program performance, and maintain open lines of communication with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and technical assistance staff available through the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce and the National Governors Association.
Subgrantees continue to request reimbursement for training activities and are progressing towards their training goals after several received an extension of their training term. No new subgrantees have received awards as part of the Energizing Careers program. The Agency has continued talks with the US Department of Labor to consider extending the term of our federal grant; thus allowing a longer period of performance for effective subgrantees. Additional time would also allow for a few changes to the program meant to spur expenditure and attract new subgrantees to the program.
As of mid-March 2013, 2,305 incumbent workers have directly benefited from the program, a total of 6,241 credentials have been awarded, and at least 380 trainees received either a wage increase or a promotion (title change or change of job description or duties) as a result of their higher skill level attributable in part to the training subsidized by the Energizing Careers grant. The sharp climb in these figures over the past few reporting quarters have been tremendous and have gone a long way towards making our case for an extension.
Numerous employers have praised the program for allowing them to increase productivity as a result of subsidized training. Some have indicated that the Energizing Careers Program has allowed their company to offer more expertise to clients and be more competitive in the marketplace because of the new skills of their employees.
